  • According to the recently received news (April 2017), the first wildlife DNA bank of North India is being set up by the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly.
  • It is expected that the bank will start by the end of this year.
  • So far this is the only bank of this type of ” Laboratory for the Protection of Endangered Species: LaCONES ” in Hyderabad.
  • DNA pattern samples of wildlife will be compiled here to prevent wildlife hunting and their trafficking.
  • Compiled samples are called ‘positive patterns’ or ‘known samples’, whose DNA sequencing is known.
  • By matching a ‘unknown pattern’ received in the future, such as a piece of flesh, blood, hair or skin to ‘known pattern’, it can be told that the unknown pattern is of which animal.
  • So far, 140 known patterns of 25 animals have been compiled.
