  • 22nd January, 2016, Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of Railways, Govt of India, inaugurated the Wi-Fi service in a function at Mumbai Central Railway station.
  • It is started as a part of an ambitious project towards Digital India initiative by Indian Railways with the help of RailTel Corporation in collaboration with Google.
  • Under this project 100 busiest railway stations of India will be covered by the end of 2016.
  • After its success this facility will be extended to 400 other stations.
  • The project of providing free Wi-Fi connectivity at railway stations across the country was announced in September 2015 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Google headquarters in the US (Mountain View) by Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai.
