  • On March 21st, 2018, World Down Sydrome Day was celebrated all over the world.
  • The main theme of this day in the year 2018 is – ‘What can I bring for my community’.
  • To demonstrate the specificity of trisomy of 21 chromosomes, the 21st of the third month of the year was selected as this day, which causes Down syndrome.
  • The nameDown syndrome was named after British doctor John Langdon Down who first discovered the syndrome (medical condition) in 1866.
  • 1 out of the estimated 1000 children in the world is born with Down syndrome.

What is Down syndrome? 

  • Down syndrome is a genetic disorder, which is caused by the presence of an additional chromosome in pair of 21 chromosomes.
  • Most of the people of most people have 46 chromosomes, but people with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in them and because of this, they look different and learn differently.
