  • During 23 and 25 May, 2018, the 108th Meeting of the UNWTO Executive Council held in San Sebastian, Spain.
  • In this three-day meeting, the Indian delegation was represented by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism, Shri K. J. Alphons.
  • Alphons chaired the meeting of the UNWTO’s ‘Program and Budget’ Committee.
  • Minister of State for Tourism (Independent Charge) met the UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili and discussed the development of a joint action plan with focus on tourism innovation and digital transformation.
  • Apart from this, the Indian delegation participated in discussions on tourism and digital transformation and started the ‘Digital India Program’ initiated by the Central Government to convert India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
  • It is known that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is an agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
  • It was founded in the year 1975 and it has headquarters in Madrid, Spain.
  • The Council meets at least twice a year, the next to be held in Bahrain.
