Ques: Recently in which Indian state birds (chickens) were culled due to Avian Influenza. On account of its severity, to prevent it from spreading Post Operation Surveillance Plan is implemented?

  • In January 2016 an unusual mortality in State Poultry Farm, Gandhigram, Tripura West district of Tripura State was occurred.
  • On account of this incident on 14-01-2016 samples were sent to National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) on 14-01-2016 which was found positive in RT-PCR and Real time RT-PCR for H5N1 AIV.
  • The Director, Animal Resources Development Department, Government of Tripura was requested to take necessary measures as per Action Plan on Avian Influenza.
  • The State government carried out control and containment operation at the epicenter which was over on 25-01-2016.
  • The State issued the sanitization certificate for the said epicenter on 25-01-2016.
  • The Department has issued the Post Operation Surveillance Plan (POSP) on 27.01.2016 which will be continued for a period of three months from the date of issue of sanitization certificate.
  • Avian influenza (AI), commonly called bird flu, is a fatal infectious viral disease of birds.
  • Avian influenza is caused by a virus; Birds are hosts for the virus. The effects of the virus in shown in domestic birds such as chickens, ducks as well as in other birds.
