  • On 18-19 February, 2017; the third National Dam Safety Conference was organized in Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
  • The conference was organized by the Central Water Commission in association with Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam and IIT Roorkee.
  • During the conference, focus was on key challenges in the field of dam safety.
  • Which are being faced for the implementation of the ongoing Dam Safety and Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIEP).
  • In the conference, knowledge, experience, innovation, innovative technologies etc. were shared by various national and foreign experts.
  • This will help in shaping the work policies to effectively manage the uncertainties related to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the dam.
  • Over 400 delegates attended the conference.
  • More than 70 research papers of national and foreign experts were presented during the conference.
  • In this conference, our technologies, products and services were displayed through exhibition organized by about 40 national and foreign organizations.
  • The function was attended by professionals from America, Australia, Japan, Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Germany.
  • With a total storage capacity of about 283 billion cubic meters, India is at third place in terms the number of large dams in the world, after China and the US.
  • About 80 percent of the big dams in India are more than 25 years of age.
  • In the year 2012, the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga, with the help of the World Bank, started the 6-year-old Dham Safety Rehabilitation and Correctional Project (DRIEP).
  • Its purpose is to strengthen the regulatory measures related to institutional reforms and safe and financially sustainable dam operations.
  • Under this project, provision of comprehensive rehabilitation and improvement has been made in 225 major dam projects in seven states of India.
  • The project is being implemented in 7 states like Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand.
