  • On 8th March, 2017, The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation organized ‘Swachh Shakti 2017 – A Convention of Women Sarpanches’ to honour Sarpanches who have contributed immensely to the movement towards a Clean India.
  • It was a mass event on the occasion of International Women’s Day in the presence of Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi.
  • The objectives of the event was to honour women Sarpanches and grassroots champions who have played a pivotal role in making their villages Open Defecation Free.
  • It also wanted to bring to light various aspects of sanitation, poverty alleviation, skill India, digital India, housing, and Beti Bachao/ Beti Padhao.
  • Besides the event was aimed at appraising the women sarpanches of various development innovations in Gujarat such as Dairy Development, Water Conservation etc.
  • Prime Minister, Narendra Modi addressed Swachh Shakti 2017 at Gandhinagar.
