  • On 15 May 2016 India successfully test fired an indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence interceptor missile from the complex of Abdul Kalam Island (formerly known as Wheeler Island) in Balasore district off Odisha coast.
  • It is capable of destroying any incoming hostile ballistic missile.
  • The interceptor was engaged against a target which was a naval version of Prithvi missile launched from a ship anchored inside Bay of Bengal, taking up the trajectory of a hostile ballistic missile.
  • It destroyed the incoming hostile missile in mid-air, in an endo-atmospheric altitude.
  • The interceptor is known as the Advanced Air Defence (AAD) missile.
  • It is developed by Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The interceptor is a 7.5-meter long single stage solid rocket propelled guided missile equipped with a navigation system, a hi-tech computer and an electro-mechanical activator.
