On June 20, 2017, Social Progress Index 2017 was released by the nonprofit organization ‘Social Progress Imparative’.
In this index, 128 countries have been given ranking based on their social progress.
The social progress index is based on three dimensions-
1. Basic Human Needs
(A) Nutrition and Basic Medical Care
(B) Water and Sanitation
(C) Shelter
(D) Personal Safety
2. Foundation of Wellbeing –
(A) Access to Basic Knowledge
(B) Access to Information and Communications
(C) Health and Wellness
(D) Environmental Quality
3. Opportunity
(A) Personal Rights
(B) Personal Freedom and Selection
(C) Tolerance and inclusion
(D) Access to Advanced Education
In the list of 128 countries in the social progress index, 2017, Denmark topped the list. Its total score is 90.57.
Other countries after Denmark are Finland (Score-90.53), Iceland (Score-90.27) and Norway (Score-90.27), and Switzerland (Score-90.10).
The countries having the lowest five positions in this index are respectively-
128. Central African Republic (Score-28.38), 127. Afghanistan (Score-35.66), 126. Chad (Score-35.69) 125. Angola (score -40.73) and 124. Niger (Score-42.97).
In Social Progress Index, India has been ranked 93rd in total of 128 countries in 2017 with score of -58.39.
While last year (2016), India was ranked 98th in total of 133 countries.
In this index among the neighboring countries of India, Sri Lanka has been ranked 73rd China 83rd, Nepal 91, Bangladesh 97th and Pakistan got the 105th place.
In developed countries, the United Kingdom is ranked 12th, Germany 13th, Japan 17th, America 18th, and France 19th.
Apart from India in the BRICS countries, Brazil is ranked 43rd , South Africa 66th , Russia 67th and China 83rd .
