  • On 4 March 2016 the Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma died of heart attack at New Delhi. He was 68.
  • He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990.
  • He was born on September 1, 1947 in village Chapahati in the West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.
  • In 1977 Sangma entered the national politics; He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Tura constituency in his home state and won the Lok Sabha seat for nine terms from here.
  • Till the formation of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) along with Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar in 1999, he was part of the Indian National Congress.
