  • On 20 August 2016 Urjit R Patel has been appointed as the 24th Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) by Union Government.
  • He has been appointed for a period of three years with effect from 4th September, 2016.
  • Patel is currently the deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India.
  • Urjit Patel has become the eighth Deputy Governor in Reserve Bank’s history to be made its Governor and the sixth with an experience at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • He joined as RBI deputy governor on January 7, 2013.
  • Patel, born on October 28, 1963, received his doctorate in economics from Yale University in 1990 and M Phil from Oxford in 1986.
  • He has worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) between 1990 and 1995 covering the US, India, Bahamas and Myanmar desks.He will be the eighth Deputy Governor to be made Governor at RBI.
