  • On 22 August 2016 National Sports Awards 2016 winners were announced.
  • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2016 has been conferred to Olympic medalists P.V. Sindhu and Sakshi Malik; ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar, and shooter Jitu Rai.
  • Dipa Karmakar’s coach, Bishweshwar Nandi, has been selected for the Dronacharya Award, along with Nagapuri Ramesh (athletics), Sagar Mal Dhayal (boxing), Raj Kumar Sharma (cricket), S. Pradeep Kumar (swimming) and Mahabir Singh (wrestling).
  • This time fifteen sportspersons will be honoured with the Arjuna Award and three with the Dhyan Chand Award.
  • Rajat Chauhan for Archery, Lalita Babar for Athletics, Sourav Kothari for Billiards & Snooker, Shiva Thapa for Boxing, Ajinkya Rahane for Cricket, Subrata Paul for Football, Rani for Hockey, Raghunath VR for Hockey, Gurpreet Singh for Shooting, Apurvi Chandela for Shooting, Soumyajit Ghosh for Table Tennis, Vinesh for Wrestling, Amit Kumar for Wrestling, Sandeep Singh Mann for Para-Athletics and Virender Singh for Wrestling (Deaf) will be honoured with the Arjuna Award.
  • Athlete Satti Geetha, hockey player Sylvanus Dung Dung and Rower Rajendra Pralhad Shelke were selected for the Dhyan Chand Award.
  • Rashtriya Khel Protsahana Purushkar, 2016 will given in four categories.
  • Seven organisations were selected for Rashtriya Khel Protsahana Purushkar, 2016 and they are Reserve Bank of India (Employment to sportspersons and other welfare measures).
  • India Infrastructure Finance Corporate Limited (Encouragement to sports through corporate social responsibility), and Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society (Sports for Development).
  • Four organisations who were chosen for the award for identification and nurturing of budding and young talent includes Hockey Citizen Group, Dadar Parsee Zorostrian cricket club, Usha School of Athletics and STAIRS.
  • Punjabi University of Patiala will be awarded the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2015-16.
  • The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2016.
  • Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh.
  • Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each.
  • Recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar will be given Trophies and certificates.
  • Overall top performing university in inter-university tournaments will be given MAKA Trophy, award money of Rs. 10 lakh and certificate.
