  • On 30 January 2016, Uttar Pradesh government signed a trilateral memorandum of understanding with the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd regarding Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY).
  • Uttar Pradesh government in order to provide 24-hour power supply in the state takes effective step towards the signing of this historic agreement.
  • Under the agreement, Uttar Pradesh would take over Rs 39,900 crore of discom debt, which is 75 per cent of the total loan of Rs 53,200 crore.
  • The aim of the state government is to provide power supply in rural areas for 16 hours a day and cities for 22-24 hours by October 2016.
  • In the current financial year electrification of 35 new transmission substations were completed and in coming 2 years government aimed to electrify 120 new transmission substations.
  • The state government aims to facilitate quick availability of power for around 1 lakhs villages and households across Uttar Pradesh by the year 2016.
