  • On May 21, 2018, India received the first cargo of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to fill one of the two strategic petroleum reserves (Caverns) made in Mangalore by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL).
  • Prior to this, on May 12, 2018, Petroleum & Natural Gas , Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister (State) of United Arab Emirates and CEO of ADNOC Group of Abu Dhabi Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, launched the process of filling of 2 million barrels of crude oil ‘MT Inspiration’ a cargo ship for crude oil.
  • This crude oil carrier ship was of the UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
  • During the UAE visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, 2018, the agreement was signed between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
  • Under this agreement, ADNOC will store roughly 5.86 million barrels of crude oil on its own expenditure in India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) unit located at Mangalore.
  • Apart from 2 million barrels of crude oil, crude oil will be supplied by ADNOC for filling Mangalore Cavern in the second half of this year.
  • This is for the first time when crude oil is being supplied by a private foreign company to the Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
  • It is known that the Government of India has constructed crude oil storage with the total capacity of 5.33 million tonnes (approximately 39 million barrels) in three places viz. Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Pudur in the first phase of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) program.
  • United Arab Emirates is the sixth largest source of crude oil for India and supplies about 6 percent of the total petroleum requirement.
