Launch of National Quality Submissions on Arsenic and Fluoride

  • On March 22, 2017, Union Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation and Panchayati Raj Minister Narendra Singh Tomar launched National Water Quality Submission on Arsenic and Fluoride.
  • It aims to provide safe drinking water to about 28,000 affected habitations in the country by March, 2021.
  • The outlay for these submissions is Rs. 25,000 crore for 4 years.
  • Both the state and the center will participate in the mission.
  • There are about 17 lakh 14 thousand rural settlements in India, out of which about 77 percent of the habitations are being provided safe drinking water more than 40 liters per day.
  • Nearly 4 percent of these habitats are suffering from water quality problems.
  • On this occasion the Ministries of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 12 States participated in the National Workshop organized on ‘Water and Clean India for All’.
  • The objective of the Government is to provide continuous water to each household by 2030, according to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission was launched in October 2014.
  • Since its launch, sanitation coverage has increased from 42 percent to 62 percent level so far.
  • So far, 119 districts and 1.75 lakh villages have been discharged from open defecation.
  • More than 3.6 million toilets have been constructed in rural areas so far.
  • Under MNREGA, 16.41 lakh toilets have been constructed.
  • On this occasion, Narendra Singh Tomar along with Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation Ramesh Jigajenagi launched the ‘Water App’.
  • Apart from this, the Minister also provided prizes to various State Governments for significant contributions in the areas of cleanliness and drinking water.
  • It is worth noting that the goal of the government is to realize the dream of ‘water every house ‘ by the year 2030.
