  • On 21 June 2016 International Day of Yoga was celebrated across the world.
  • India’s Permanent Mission to the UN has organized celebrations at the United Nations on June 20 and 21.
  • A special event titled “Conversation with Yoga Masters – Yoga for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” was organised.
  • This year’s celebration was marked under the theme “Connect the Youth”.
  • It may be recalled that on 11 December 2014 UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/69/131 designated 21 June International Day of Yoga.
  • Spiritual leader and Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev lead the yoga session held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • This yoga session was attended by 135 countries for the first time.
  • On the occasion Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated second International Yoga Day in Chandigarh.
  • Where he joined approximately 30,000 participants in a mass Yoga demonstration.
  • The Prime Minister called for focus in the next one year, on how to mitigate diabetes through Yoga.
  • He said that to honour those who are working to popularize Yoga, two awards will be instituted, one at the national level, and the other at the international level.
  • On this day Baba Ramdev performed Yoga with One lakh people in Faridabad, Haryana and the performance has also been recorded in Guinness Book Of World Records.
  • 408 people from Patanjali set a world record by doing shirsaasan (standing on one’s head) at the same time for 5 seconds, previously the record was held by Citizen land where 265 people has performed shirsaasan(standing on one’s head) at the same time.
  • In the same program Rohtash Chaudhary set another world record by performing 51 push-ups in 1 minute with 80 pounds on his back.
