  • On 22 February 2021, Union Minister of Health & family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan launched the operational guidelines for the integration of NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) with NPCDCS (National Programme for Prevention & Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke).
  • With this move, India has become the first country in the world to identify the need for action for NAFLD.
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an umbrella term for a range of liver conditions affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.
  • The persons suffering NAFLD can develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) that can advance to cirrhosis and liver failure.
