Question: National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved projects for the creation of sewage treatment infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and UT of Delhi. The cost of this project is –
(a) Rs 1,200 Cr.
(b) Rs 1,500 Cr.
(c) Rs 1,800 Cr.
(d) Rs 1,900 Cr.

  • On June 5, 2017, National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) approved projects worth Rs 1,900 Crore for the creation of sewage treatment infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and UT of Delhi.
  • Under this project hundred percent sewage treatment facilities will be made available for Haridwar, Rishikesh, Vrindavan, Varanasi, Allahabad and NCT of Delhi.
  • Under ‘Maily Se Nirmal Yamuna’ project in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, construction of as many as seven prioritized STPs of total capacity of 94 MLD in Najafgarh area have been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 344.81 crore.
  • A comprehensive project of interception, diversion and treatment of sewage in Naini, Phaphamau and Jhunsi sewerage zones of Allahabad at an estimated cost of Rs 767.59 crore has also been approved.
  • A 42 MLD (million litres per day) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will be constructed in Naini and eight pumping station will also be build.
  • The projects would also arrest flowing waste water of 18 drains into the Ganga and Yamuna to ensure pollution free water for bathing at Sangam during Ardh Kumbh mela 2019.
  • The NMCG cleared the Rs 744-crore projects including a 60-MLD STP and laying of sewerage lines in Pahari zone in Bihar’s Patna.
  • An all-encompassing programme at an estimated cost of Rs 61.5 crore, in five Ganga main stem States – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal has also been given approval.
