  • On 9 October 2016 Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt of India has unveiled “Himansh” the glaciological research facility.
  • It is Located in Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of nearly 13,500 feet(4000 m).
  • The research lab, established by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR).
  • It has automatic weather stations, ground penetrating radars, geodetic GPS systems and other sophisticated facilities to study glaciers and their discharge.
  • The facility will serve as the base for Terrestrial Laser Scanners and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to digitise glacier movements and snow cover variations.
  • HIMANSH literally meaning, a slice of ice.
