  • On September 13th, 2017, in a meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh it was decided to grant Indian citizenship to Chakma and Hajong refugees.
  • Nearly one lakh Chakma and Hajong refugees came from the erstwhile East Pakistan five decades ago and currently living in camps in the Northeast.
  • Mostly, these refugees are staying in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu were present in the meeting.
  • In 2015, the Centre was directed by the Supreme Court to confer citizenship to these refugees.
  • It is notable that Chakmasand Hajongs were originally residents of Chittagong Hill Tracts in the erstwhile East Pakistan who left their homeland when it was submerged by the Kaptai dam project in the 1960s.
