- On 24 May 2016 Union Minister of Urban Development and Housing, Venkaiah Naidu has announced list of cities included in Smart City Mission.
- For this a Fast Track competition was conducted.
- There were 23 cities in the competition, of these 23 cities, only 13 could qualify for the smart city project.
- Lucknow(Uttar Pradesh) topped the list of winners of the Fast Track competition followed by Warangal(Telangana) and Dharamshala(Himachal Pradesh)
- Other cities, which won this round, were Chandigarh, Raipur (Chhattisgarh), New Town Kolkata, Bhagalpur (Bihar), Panaji (Goa), Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), Imphal (Manipur), Ranchi (Jharkhand), Agartala (Tripura) and Faridabad (Haryana).
- These cities can submit their revised smart city plans for evaluation in the second round of regular competition underway by the end of June, 2016.
- It may be recalled that Under the Smart City Mission, 100 cities across the country will be developed as smart cities by 2019-20 with the Union government providing financial support to the extent of Rs 48,000 crore over five years.
- On 28 January 2016 union government has announced the 1st batch of 20 smart cities from 11 States and Union Territory of Delhi under this mission.
- The central government will invest in the development of infrastructure of these cities for providing modern facilities to residents of these cities.
