  • On 5 February 2016, The Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) has directedto proceed with registration of a geographical indication (GI) tag for Basmati rice.
  • It will be issued according to the geographical demarcation conducted by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
  • Under this seven north Indian Basmati rice-producing states like Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir will get the GI tag.
  • The appellate authority also asked to reconsider the matter of inclusion of uncovered areas, including Madhya Pradesh, Odisha in the area covered under the GI for Basmati.
  • India exported 37 lakh million tons of Basmati Rice to the world worth 27,597.87 crore in 2014-15.
  • India export majority of the basmati rice to the following countries Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Kuwait.
