  • On March 20, 2017; in a historic decision the Uttarakhand High Court declared Rivers Ganga and Yamuna to be given the status of living human.
  • A Bench of High Court Judge Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Alok Singh issued a directive on a PIL filed by Mohd Salim.
  • The court also gave an example of New Zealand’s Wanganui River in this regard, which has recently been given this kind of status.
  • After this decision, rivers of Ganga and Yamuna got status of legal person.
  • This can be filed against these rivers and on their behalf in civil courts and other courts.
  • Apart from this, the High Court has directed to constitute Ganga Management Board in eight weeks.
