- On March 21st, 2017; senior IAS officer Upendra Tripathi was appointed as the full time Interim Director General (IDG) of the International Solar Association (ISA).
- His appointment was decided jointly by Central Energy, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Minister Piyush Goyal and France’s Environment and Energy Minister Segolene Royal.
- Upendra Tripathi is the Karnataka batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service.
- He was the full secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
- It is known that on January 25th, 2016, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Holland inaugurated the ISA Interim Secretariat in National Solar Energy Institute (NISE) located in Gurugram (Haryana).
- Along with this, both leaders also laid the foundation stone of the ISA headquarters.
- It is significant that on November 30th, 2015, the two leaders had announced the ‘International Solar Association’ during the summit held in Paris (COP-21).
- It is a coalition of 122 countries, where at least 300 days of sunlight is available in the year.
