Frozen water deposits

QuestionScientist have found frozen water deposits on the moon’s polar regions by using data from-
(a)Chandrayaan-1
(b)Chandrayaan-2
(c)Chandrayaan-3
(d)None of the above
Answer-(a)
Related facts-

  • Frozen water deposits in the darkest and coldest parts of the Moon’s Polar Regions have been found by scientists by using data from the NASA’s Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument aboard the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft.

About (M3), Moon Mineralogy Mapper-

  • M3 is an instrument which was placed in the chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launched in 2008 by ISRO.
  • It was equipped to confirm the presence of solid ice on the moon.
  • It collected data which not only raises the reflected properties which we expect from snow, but it was also able to measure the specific way of absorbing its infrared light to molecules, so it can differentiate between liquid water or vapor and solid ice.

About chandrayaan-1

  • It was India’s first lunar mission and was launched by the Indian space research organization in October 2008 by using a PSLV-XL rocket from satish dhawan space centre and operated till august 2009.
  • It included lunar orbiter and an impactor.
  • The mission performed high-resolution remote sensing of the moon in visible, near infrared (NIR), low energy X-rays and high-energy X-ray regions.
  • It aimed at carry out chemical and mineralogical mapping of the entire lunar surface for distribution of mineral and chemical elements.
