  • On 18th May, 2018, the Supreme Court approved the Centre’s draft Cauvery Management Scheme for smooth distribution of water among four southern riparian states (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry).
  • The three-member bench of Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Justice A.M. Khanvilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud rejected the suggestions of Karnataka and Kerala governments over the scheme, terming them as devoid of merits.
  • The bench said that the verdict of the revised Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal will be passed to the final conclusion by the Cauvery Management Plan in the verdict of the Supreme Court on February 16, 2018.
  • It is known that the apex court, in its verdict delivered on February 16, had asked the Centre to frame the Cauvery management scheme, including creation of the Cauvery Management Board, for release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry.
  • The bench also dismissed Tamil Nadu’s plea seeking initiation of contempt against the Centre for non-finalisation of Cauvery scheme. .
  • The apex court clarified that it will see that this scheme is only in reference to the court’s decision.
  • Earlier, the court had objected to the provision of giving the right to center about the direction of the scheme from time to time, which resulted in that the center removed of this provision.
