  • On 1 March 2016 Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research foundation announced the name of the winners of “The Brain Prize” for the year 2016.
  • Three British scientists have won a prestigious brain prize for their ground-breaking work into memory namely Timothy Bliss, Graham Collingridge and Richard Morris.
  • This is the first time the Brain Prize has been won by an entirely UK team.
  • The three neuro scientists have independently and collectively shown how the connections – the synapses – between brain cells in the hippocampus (a structure vital for the formation of new memories) can be strengthened through repeated stimulation.
  • It may be recalled that in 2015 this was awarded to Winfried Denk, Arthur Konnerth, Karel Svoboda and David W. Tank.
