  • On March 31, 2017; the new mega power policy was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • Mega project status has been given to 25 power projects under this new policy.
  • This decision will remove the hurdle in the construction of these power projects and power generation will start.
  • Duration of completion of mega power projects has been increased from 60 months (5 years) to 120 months (10 years).
  • Under this policy, exemptions have also been given to these projects that they will be able to get loans from the banks according to the amount of electricity they have entered in the deal to sale the electricity buyers.
  • It was the rule at present, of obtaining loans from banks only after the complete electricity sale agreement.
  • The goal of the government is to provide adequate electricity at all costs to all citizens of the country by the year 2022.
