  • On June 21, 2017, terrorist organization Islamic State destroyed the historic al-Nuri mosque and it’s famous shrine Minar Al-Hadba located in Mosul city of Iraq.
  • The mosque is also known as Mosul’s Great Mosque. This is where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a so-called Islamic caliphate in 2014 shortly after Mosul was overrun by the militants.
  • The minaret destroyed in the attack, were 840 years old.
  • IS has demolished dozens of historic and archaeological sites in and around Mosul, saying they promoted idolatry.
