  • On 9th March, 2017; the Ministry of Railways has signed, intent to compile joint cooperation with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in the Rail Bhawan to formulate a joint venture in the field of environmental protection.
  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu was also present on this occasion.
  • Representatives of India and UNEP exchange of the letter of intent for jointly exploring opportunities and arranging cooperation in the field of environment and sustainability.
  • Focus areas marked for the initiative include:
  • To assist in the preparation of a specific road map to achieve 20% reduction in water consumption at Railway establishments.
  • To assist in developing a draft work plan for setting up a waste management center at the major stations of Indian Railways.
  • Cooperate in developing a draft action plan for Indian Railways on sustainable public procurement for Green Technology.
  • This will make Indian Railways go ahead in ensuring more green and better transport system.
