- On 28th February, 2017, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Haji Abdul Salam passed away following a brief illness. He was 69.
- He was born on 1st March, 2017, at Heibong Makhong in Thoubal district of Manipur.
- Haji Abdul Salam was the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of RS from Manipur. He had been representing the state in the upper house since 2014.
- He was elected to the 3rd, 6th and 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wabagai assembly constituency.
- The Vice President of India, Mr. M. Hamid Ansari condoled the passing away of Abdul Salam. In a message, he said that Mr. Salam will be remembered for his service to the people of Manipur.
