  • On 28 September 2016 World Economic Forum (WEF) has release Global Competitiveness Report for 2016-17.
  • The Global Competitiveness Report 2016-2017 assesses the competitiveness landscape of 138 economies, providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.
  • 2016-17 Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) is the part of the report is calculated by aggregating indicators across 12 pillars in the report which covers both business and social indicators.
  • The 12 pillars includes institutions, macro-economic environment, infrastructure, health and primary education, higher education and training, labour market efficiency, goods and market efficiency among others.
  • Switzerland has been ranked 1st for the eighth times in a row with the score of 5.81.
  • Singapore and the United States stayed in second and third place with the score of 5.7 each.
  • The Netherlands overtook Germany for fourth place, while Sweden in sixth spot and Britain in seventh leap-frogged Japan, Hong Kong and Finland.
  • Last five countries in the Index are Yemen (Rank- 138, score-2.7), Martania (Rank- 137, score-2.9), Chad (Rank- 136, score-2.9), Burundi (Rank- 135, score-3.1) and Malawi (Rank- 134, score-3.1).
  • India jumped 16 places to the 39th position with the score of 4.5 in the last year in the WEF’s Global Competitiveness Index.
  • In the year 2015-16, India was ranked at the 55th place(Out of 140).
  • Among neighboring countries of India, Sri Lanka has been ranked 71st in index (score-4.2), Bhutan 97th (score-3.9), Nepal 98th (score-3.9), Bangladesh 106 th (score-3.8) and Pakistan 122nd (score-3.5).
  • Among the developed countries of the world to Japan has been ranked 8th(score-5.5), the 9th Hong Kong (score-5.5), the United Kingdom 7th (score-5.5) and the France 21th (score -5.2).
  • Among the emerging economies of the BRICS countries, China has been ranked 28th (score-5.0), Russia 43rd (score-4.5), South Africa 47th (score-4.5) and Brazil 81 th (score -4.1) is achieved.
