- World Elephant Day was co-founded on 12 August 2012, President of World Elephant Society and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand.
Indian Context:
- In India from 12 August, 4 day event “Gaj Mahotsav” was celebrated by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Wildlife Trust of India, at Indira Gandhi Centre for Natural Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi.
- In order to commemorate World Elephant day, an award ceremony was also conducted. Maniknandan was given “Best Elephant Warrior”.
- The award for making a significant contribution to the cause of conservation of Asian elephant was given to Mr. John Burton & Ms. Vivien Burton.
- “Mere Desh ki Zameen-Wild Anthem” was also released composed by eminent lyricist Prasoon Joshi and sung by prominent singers Shreya Ghosal,Sunidhi Chauhan,Vishal Dadlani and Beni Dayal.
