- Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa visited India on 19-20 December 2019.
- It is noteworthy that Antonio Costa’s current visit to India is his first bilateral visit outside Europe after being re-elected as Prime Minister on October 6, 2019.
- During the visit, he attended the second meeting of the Organizing Committee on the celebrations for the 150th Birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 19 Dec 2019.
- This meeting of the Organizing Committee was presided over by the President Ram Nath Kovind.
- On December 19, 2019, he held official talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- This was the third official meeting between the Prime Ministers in a span of 3 years.
- The high level political exchanges between India and Portugal have imparted a robust momentum to bilateral relations, including in several new areas such as science and technology, defence, startups, shipping, youth exchanges and culture.
India –Portugal Relations:
- Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in the year 1949.
- The two countries share an excellent political relationship today.
- Portugal is supporting of India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
- Portugal is the first member country of the European Union to agree to extradition if anyone is facing charges in India.
- In October 2005, Portugal extradited Abu Salem and Monica Bedi to India facing terror charges in India.
- On October 9, 2015, Portugal became the first European and western country, and only the fourth outside the East Asia Summit, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of the Nalanda University in India.
- A bilateral Agreement on Trade, Economic, Industrial and Technical Cooperation was signed in 1977 to give an impetus and improve bilateral trade relations.
