  • In order to give effect a stringent Act to protect cows and prevent their slaughter, Uttar Pradesh government approved Cow Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020.

Changes made:

  • The Act(amended)under its section 5 suggests punishment for transportation of bovine animals.
  • It penalizes for the conviction of danger to their lives through physical damage or mutilation.
  • There is a provision of rigorous imprisonment of at least 1 year if someone is guilty of putting cow’s life in danger by not providing food and water intentionally.
  • For the first time offence of damage to cow, a person can be given a rigorous punishment of one to seven years with a fine ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh.
  • For the second offence, the person can be given a 10-year rigorous imprisonment with a fine up to ₹5 lakh.

Background:

  • As a result of government’s firm determination to save cows, the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955 was implemented in the state on January 6, 1956.
  • The Act was amended in 1958, 1961, 1979 and 2002. The rules were amended in 1964 and 1979.
