  • On 9 December 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) granted observer status to the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • Information regarding this, UNGA’s decision has been given by India’s Permanent Ambassador to United Nations, T S Tirumurti.
  • India has described the decision as historic, saying it will help provide a well-defined cooperation between the alliance and the United Nations.
  • Tirumurti expressed the hope; ISA will now drive global energy growth and development.
  • According to the ISA website, a total of 80 countries have signed and ratified the ISA draft agreement and 101 countries have signed the agreement only.
  • Tirumurti said that ISA has become an example of positive global climate action through partnerships to benefit global energy production.
  • He said that in 6 years, International Solar Alliance has become an example of positive global climate action through partnerships at various levels.
  • The fourth general assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), was held earlier in October 2021.
  • A total of 108 countries participated in the Assembly, including 74 Member Countries and 34 Observer and Prospective Countries, 23 Partner Organizations and 33 Special Invitee Organisations.
  • It should be noted that the launch of the ISA was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President Francois Hollande in 2015.
  • It was the occasion of 21st session of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Paris, France when these two leaders came forward to launch ISA.
