The sites:

  • The Asan Conservation Reserve in Dehradun has been included in the Ramsar Wetland sites.It is the first wetland from Uttarakhand to be recognised by Ramsar.
  • Kabartal Wetland also known as Kanwar Jheel, covering 2,620 hectares of the Indo-Gangetic plains is in the northern Bihar State.
  • With these inclusions the total number of Ramsar Sites in India rose to 39.

Ramsar Convention on Wetlands:

  • The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and came into force in 1975.
  • The convention entered into force in India on 1 February 1982.
  • It is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.
