  • On January 16, the system started moving south-eastwards towards Fiji and passed within 40 km (25 mi) of the Fijian dependency of Rotuma.
  • The system had developed into a Category 1 tropical cyclone, on the scale as it passed near Rotuma.
  • At this point the Fiji Meteorological Service FMS named it Tino.
  • Tino continued strengthening as it passed over Fiji, bringing copious amounts of rainfall to the area.
  • Whilst losing latitude, the system continued to strengthen and peaked as a category 3 tropical cyclone on January 17.
