  • In this Gender gap index (GGI) WEF has included 145 countries whereas last year (in 2014) 142 countries were included in the Index.
  • India is ranked 108th with a score of 0.664, out of 145 countries while last year it was ranked 114 in 142 countries.
  • The Global Gender Gap Index examines gender gaps in four areas. These are as follows:

  3. Health and Survival
  4. Political Empowerment
  • This index have 0-1 range, The 0 means complete gender inequality and 1 means full gender equality.

  • Among BRICS countries South Africa is ranked highest (17th).
  • Other BRICS countries are ranked as Russia 75th, Brazil 85th and China ranked 91st.
  • Clearly, India ranked (108th) lowest among BRICS countries.
  • There is no country which has scored 1 in this index, means any country in the world has not achieved full gender equality.
  • Iceland topped the index (score -0.881).
  • After that Norway ranked 2nd with the score of 0.850, Finland 3rd (0.850), Sweden 4th (0.823) and Ireland 5th (0.807).
  • Five countries with least gender equality are Iran (141), Chad (142), Syria (143), Pakistan (144) and Yemen (145).
  • The Global Gender Gap Index was first introduced by the World Economic Forum in 2006.
