  • Implementation of the Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India (STCI) was launched on 19th October, 2016 by Shri Vinod Zutshi, Secretary Ministry of Tourism in association with Ecotourism Society of India (ESOI).
  • STCI were defined and launched on 26th August 2014 by the then Tourism Minister in Hyderabad after elaborate discussion with all stakeholders.
  • India is one of the few countries in the world to have a criteria of its own.
  • These criterions are specific to India and cater to the specific environment that India’s tourism industry operates in.
  • The Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India (STCI) has been developed for accommodation, tour operators, beaches, backwaters and lakes sectors of the tourism industry.
  • The STCI follow the guidelines set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC) that has been evolved under the guidance of the United Nations’ agencies like UNEP and UNWTO.
