  • In order to recognize the excellent work done in the field of Disaster Management,Government of India has announced the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar 2020.
  • The award is announced every year 23rd January, on the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

The Award:

  • Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar has been instituted with an aim to recognise the efforts of individuals and organisations who have been working assiduously to alleviate the human suffering caused by disasters.
  • Three eligible institutions and individuals will be given the ‘Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar’ every year.
  • Institution shall be conferred a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 51 lakhs.
  • Whereas, individual awardee willl receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 5.00 lakhs.

Awardee 2020:

  • Disaster Mitigation & Management Centre, Uttarakhand has been selected in the institution category.
  • Former IPS officer Kumar Munnan Singh has been selected in Individual category. He was appointed founder member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in 2005, following his commendable work during 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

  • 8th Battalion of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) located at Ghaziabad

Natural Disaster & NDRF:

  • The mid nineties and the subsequent decade saw much international debate & discussion around Disaster Response & Preparedness.
  • Some of the notable and more impactful ones were the Yokohama Strategy Plan (1994) & the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005), adopted by the UN.
  • During the same period India faced some of its most severe natural calamities like Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), Gujarat Earthquake (2001) and Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004).
  • To tackle the natural calamities causing massive damages to life and livelihood, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was formed under the Disaster Management Act,2005.
  • In 2006 NDRF was constituted with 8 Battalions. At present, NDRF has a strength of 12 Battalions,three each from the BSF and CRPF and two each from CISF, ITBP and SSB.
