  • During 9-12 April, 2017, on the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull, was on a state visit to India.
  • This was the first visit of Prime Minister Turnbull to India.
  • Prior to this, Prime Minister Tony Abbott visited India in September 2014.
  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was formally welcomed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 10, 2017.
  • He went to Rajghat and paid homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
  • During this visit, he met President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari.
  • On April10, 2017, there was a delegation-level bilateral dialogue between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malcolm Turnbull at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
  • After the talks, the following MOUs were signed in different important areas between the two countries.
    (I) Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in international terrorism and international organized crime.
    (II) Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation and development in civil aviation security.
    (III) Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of environment, climate and wildlife.
    (IV) Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in sports.
    (V) Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of health and medicine.
    (VI)Memorandum of understanding between ISRO and Geology Australia on Earth Observation and Collaboration in Satellite Navigation.
  • After the agreement, the Joint Statement was issued between the two countries.
  • Malcolm Turnbull said in his statement that Australia will soon export uranium to India.
  • Along with this, he said that Australia will help in India’s flagship program ‘Make in India’, Smart City and for the availability of 24 hour electricity.
  • On April 12, 2017, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Vijay Goyal launched a sports partnership in Mumbai to increase cooperation in the field of sports.
