  • Madhya Pradesh’s Indore was adjudged the cleanest city for the fifth consecutive year by Swachh Sarvekshan 2021.
  • The event was organized during the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’.
  • It was a celebration of the achievements of cities in the last seven years of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan-Urban.
  • Swachh Sarvekshan:
  • It conducts an annual survey of cleanliness, waste management and overall cleanliness in cities and towns of India.

  • The cities of Vita, Lonavala and Saswad in Maharashtra were the first, second and third cleanest cities respectively.
  • Population more than 1 lakh:
  • Indore (Madhya Pradesh) has been adjudged the cleanest city in India under the Swachh Survekshan for the fifth consecutive year, while Surat and Vijayawada have secured the second and third positions respectively.
  • Hoshangabad emerged as the ‘Fastest Moving City’ in Madhya Pradesh, thus securing the 87th position among the top 100 cities.
  • Best Ganga Town: Varanasi.
  • Cleanest Cantonment: Ahmedabad Cantonment was declared India’s Cleanest Cantonment’, followed by Meerut Cantonment and Delhi Cantonment.
  • Cleanest state:
  • States with more than 100 Urban Local Bodies:
  • Chhattisgarh has been awarded as the ‘Cleanest State’ of India for the third consecutive year.
  • Karnataka has emerged as the Fastest Mover State.
  • States with less than 100 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs):
  • Jharkhand won the cleanest state award in the Urban Local Bodies Category for the second time.
  • Mizoram emerged as the Fast Mover State in the category of small (less than 100 ULB) state.
  • Motivational Round awards:
  • A new performance category was introduced under Swachh Sarvekshan 2021, with five cities- Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi Municipal Council and Tirupati classified as ‘Divya’ (Platinum).
  • Other Honors:
  • Safai Mitra Safety Challenge(SMSC):
  • The top performing cities are Indore, Navi Mumbai, Nellore and Dewas, out of 246 cities that have participated under the Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge.
  • The top performing states among that participated in SMSC are Chhattisgarh and Chandigarh.
  • 5-Star Rating Garbage Free Cities in India:
  • Under the Star Rating Protocol of Garbage Free Cities, 9 cities were certified as 5-Star cities, while 166 cities were certified as 3-Star and 167 as one star out of total 342 cities participated in this rating.
  • A total of 9 cities- Indore, Surat, New Delhi Municipal Council, Navi Mumbai, Ambikapur, Mysore, Noida, Vijayawada and Patan have been certified as 5-star cities.
