- On 24 May 2016 Assam Governor P. B Acharya administered the oath to Sarbananda Sonowal as the 14th Chief Minister of Assam during a swearing-in ceremony at Veterinary College play ground, Khanapara in Guwahati.
- Sarbananda Sonowal was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Majuli.
- It may be recalled that in recently held 2016 Legislative Assembly Election Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partners have won an absolute majority by winning 86 seats out of 126 in Assam state assembly election.

- He was formerly the Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs and Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development in the Narendra Modi Government.
- His tenure as Union Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs and Minister of State for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development was from May 26, 2014 to May 23, 2016.
- He also served as the President of Assam’s oldest student body, the All Assam Students Union, from 1992 to 1999.
