- Raghuvendra Tanwar, a professor emeritus and former registrar of the Kurukshetra University, has been appointed as chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) .
- As per a January 5,2022 notification issued by Union ministry of education, Prof Tanwar’s appointment is for three years.
- Prof Tanwar, who joined KU as lecturer in August 1977, has an outstanding academic record, with two gold medals in MA history.
- He was appointed as director of the Haryana Academy of History and Culture in 2016.
- Prof Tanwar is known for his study of India’s Partition, particularly Punjab.
- About ICHR:
- The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education Government of India
- It was established by the Ministry of Education & Social Welfare, Govt. of India (now, Ministry of Education) on 27th March 1972.
- The objectives of the Council as laid down in the Memorandum of Association (MoA) are as under:
a) To foster objective and scientific writing of history such as to inculcate an informed appreciation of the country’s national and cultural heritage
b) To review the progress of historical research from time to time and indicate neglected or new areas where research needs to be especially promoted.
c) To sponsor historical research programmes and assist institutions and organizations engaged in historical research.
d) To maintain a National Register of research workers in history and their fields of specialization.
e) To provide technical assistance for the formulation of historical research programme by individuals or institutions and to support institutional arrangements for training in research methodology.
