Recent Context

  • On 8th and 9th November 2021, President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind presented the Padma Award for the year 2020 and 2021 respectively in New Delhi.
  • Related Facts
  • The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian honours of India announced annually on the eve of Republic Day.
  • It was instituted in 1954, except for brief interruption (suspended) during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997.
  • All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards.
  • However, Government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible for these Awards.
  • It seeks to recognize achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.
  • For the year 2021, the President has approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards including 1 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one).
  • The awards comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards.
  • 29 of the awardees are women , 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 16 Posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee.

2021 Padma Award List

  • Manjamma Jogathi is first transgender to receive the Padma Shri award. She is a Kannada theatre actress, singer and dancer of Jogti Nritya, a folk dance form of North Karnataka.
