  • National Mission on Clean Ganga (NMCG) organized a brainstorming session on World GIS day 2018 on 14th November, 2018, in New Delhi.
  • ‘Namami Gange Programme’, is an Integrated Conservation Mission, approved as ‘Flagship Programme’ by the Union Government in June 2014 to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
  • Theme of the session was ‘G-governance of Namami Gange through geospatial technology’.





  • Objective of the session was to share the knowledge on use and application of geospatial technology for monitoring and management of various activities being undertaken under Namami Gange Programme. It will also provide information current use of this technology related to Ganga basin.
  • NMCG and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre has signed a MoU for the use of geospatial technology in June 2015 and have developed Bhuvan Ganga geo-portal and Bhuvan Ganga mobile app.
  • NMCG has collaborated with Survey of India and are using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology for mapping the Ganga basin in high resolutiongenerating Digital Elevation Models (DEM). It will provide valuable information for identifying the baseline of river flood plains and will make plans for restoration and preservation. Critical pollution hotspots are also easily identified through this technology.




  • It uses drone to capture 360 degree view of Kumbh Mela area to identify pollution, sources IIT Kanpur working on project for Reconstructing the Ganga of the Past from Corona archival imagery.
  • GIS day provides an international forum for users of geographic information system (GIS) technology to demonstrate real world’s application that are making a difference in our society.
  • The first formal GIS day took place in 1999.
