  • Green Peace India on 14 December 2015 released a report on National Air Quality Index (NAQI) of 17 cities.
  • As many as fifteen of the 17 Indian cities with NAQI stations showed levels of air pollution that far exceed the prescribed Indian standards.
  • For the index Air pollution data were collected from April 2015 and November 2015.
  • Out of all 17 cities air pollution is highest in Delhi.
  • Pollution levels in many Indian cities, including Delhi, Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Patna, Agra and Kanpur, exceed the famously toxic levels in Beijing and other Chinese cities, over the period covered by the NAQI data (April-November 2015).
  • It is said in the report that “The concentrations of PM2.5 in several other cities like Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Muzzafarpur and Faridabad, amongst others is a ‘Red Alert”.
  • Comparing the situation in China and India, Delhi’s PM2.5 levels in July-November were almost twice as high as the levels in Beijing in April-November 2015.
  • PM10 levels in Delhi in the same period were more than three times as high as in Beijing.
  • The cities- Lucknow, Faridabad, Ahmedabad, Kanpur and Varanasi had average levels at least 10 times as high as the WHO annual guideline.
