- The Union Cabinet under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi gave its approval for establishment and operationalisation of a National Academic Depository (NAD) on 27th October, 2016.
- The NAD would be established and operationalised within the next three months and would be rolled out throughout the country in 2017-18.
- The NAD would be operationalised by National Securities Depository Limited and Central Depository Services (India) Limited.
- NAD shall maintain the authenticity, integrity and confidentiality of its database. It will also train and facilitate academic institutions/boards/ to efficiently lodge academic awards in the database.
What is NAD?
- NAD is a unique, innovative and progressive step towards achieving digital enablement of the educational records. NAD aims to make the vision of Digital Academic Certificates for every Indian a reality. NAD is not only a database copy of the certificate records for Academic Institutes but a complete system for Issuing Online Certificates to well identified and registered students. It will provide digital or a printed copy of the academic award with security features to the students or other authorized users. NAD will verify academic awards online on the same day of request initiated by any authorized user. The decision aims at bringing another dimension and enhancement to the vision of Digital India.
