  • On 21 October 2016 National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) has sanctioned Rs 19,702 crore loan to National Water Development Agency (NWDA) for 50 irrigation projects.
  • The loan is sanctioned under Long Term Irrigation Fund (LTIF).
  • This would help create additional irrigation potential of 39.14 lakh hectares under these projects in 11 states.
  • This loan would be part of the Central share of assistance to State Governments and will ensure front loading of resources so that the identified incomplete irrigation projects under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna (PMKSY) are executed in time.
  • This unique initiative would help complete not only the irrigation projects but also the Command Area Development works which are central to ensure full utilisation of irrigation potential so created.
  • National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is an apex development bank in India, headquartered at Mumbai with branches all over India.
  • The Bank has been entrusted with “matters concerning policy, planning and operations in the field of credit for agriculture and other economic activities in rural areas in India”. NABARD is active in developing financial inclusion policy and is a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion.
